چکیده

94 The rates of reported HIV-associated central nervous system (CNS) complications have declined since the advent of potent antiretroviral therapy (Figure 1). Although our progress is impressive, a close look shows that HIV-associated neurocognitive disturbance is still an important issue despite the vast clinical improvements achieved with antiretroviral treatment. Systematic evaluation of more than 1000 clinic patients in the CNS HIV Antiretroviral Effects Research (CHARTER) cohort shows that neurologic impairment is present in 50% or more, a rate comparable to that in the pre–antiretroviral era (Figure 2). Many factors likely contribute to ongoing neurologic complications despite the ability of current drugs to profoundly suppress viral replication. These factors include ongoing viral replication and immune activation in the CNS, comorbid factors like the use of both nonprescription and prescription drugs, perhaps including antiretroviral drugs, coinfections like with hepatitis B and C, and genetic influences of both the virus and the host.

Hippocampal Astrocyte Response to Melatonin Following Neural Damage Induction in Rats

Introduction: Brain injury induces an almost immediate response from glial cells, especially astrocytes. Activation of astrocytes leads to the production of inflammatory cytokines and reactive oxygen species that may result in secondary neuronal damage. Melatonin is an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant agent, and it has been reported to exert neuroprotection through the prevention of neuronal d...

Relationship between Mitochondrial Dysfunction and Multiple Sclerosis: A Review Study

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system that inflammation, demyelination, oligodendrocyte loss, gliosis, axonal injury and neurodegeneration are the main histopathological hallmarks of the disease. Although MS was classically thought as a demyelinating disease, but axonal injury occurs commonly in acute inflammatory lesions. In MS mi...

Cellular and Molecular Mechanisms Involved in Neuroinflammation after Acute Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury

Introduction: Spinal cord injury (SCI) following traumatic events is associated with the limited therapeutic options and sever complications, which can be partly due to inflammatory response. Therefore, this study aims to explore the role of inflammation in spinal cord injury. The findings showed that the pathological conditions of nervous system lead to activation of microglia, astrocyte, neut...

Astrocyte activation is suppressed in both normal and injured brain by FGF signaling.

In the brain, astrocytes are multifunctional cells that react to insults and contain damage. However, excessive or sustained reactive astrocytes can be deleterious to functional recovery or contribute to chronic inflammation and neuronal dysfunction. Therefore, astrocyte activation in response to damage is likely to be tightly regulated. Although factors that activate astrocytes have been ident...

Neuroinflammatory paradigms in lysosomal storage diseases

Lysosomal storage diseases (LSDs) include approximately 70 distinct disorders that collectively account for 14% of all inherited metabolic diseases. LSDs are caused by mutations in various enzymes/proteins that disrupt lysosomal function, which impairs macromolecule degradation following endosome-lysosome and phagosome-lysosome fusion and autophagy, ultimately disrupting cellular homeostasis. L...

O 13: Ion Channels in Autoimmune Neurodegeneration

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system characterized by widespread inflammation, focal demyelination and a variable degree of axonal and neuronal loss. Ionic conductances regulate T cell activation as well as neuronal function and thus have been found to play a crucial role in MS pathogenesis. Since present therapeutical approaches are only parti...
